I am a California native who enjoys exploring the natural world through photography. I find most of my subjects regionally, primarily in Yolo County. This may include agriculture related landscapes and farming activities, natural landscapes, wildlife, but most often, botanical subjects. I enjoy immersing myself in projects, becoming intimately familiar with subjects or diving into creative methods for the post processing of images which often results in unexpected, but intriguing outcomes. A few of my projects are described below.
The Fallen series of images arose from taking the time to look down at the ground, below the main subject of a shrub or tree, and observing the beauty of the fallen treasures after they have served their purpose. The fallen leaves or flowers create their own patterns and can be rich in color and texture. However, sometimes I arrange the subjects into specific patterns or compositions.
The Sleeping Bee project developed from the exploration of flowers in the early mornings of summer, where native male bees can be found sleeping alone or in aggregations. Through observation I realized the bees come back to the same flowers every night, until the blooms drop. They then move to another nearby flower maintaining their same groupings, and the process repeats itself until the end of the bee’s lifecycle.
The Barn Project is a 3 year study of an old red barn. I drove by it on my way home from work and when the conditions were interesting I stopped to photograph it. The mood was different each time, resulting in a varied collection of images. I became friends with the farmer, sharing my work with him. In return, he planted sunflowers for me and told me when harvest would occur. The old barn needed to be painted to preserve it, thus ending the series. But I still love that old barn and occasionally take photos of it.
Multiple Exposure photography opens an unlimited world of experimentation of both natural and made-made subjects. Combining two or more images in camera or on the computer creates a dynamic work that holds the viewers gaze and opens one’s imagination for interpretation.
Photography provides endless opportunities for exploration and creativity. I love how photography connects me to nature and my surroundings through deeply observing light, color, shape and texture in everything around me.
